JI Student Delves into Cultural Richness of Suzhou

JI Student Delves into Cultural Richness of Suzhou

In March, China Daily sponsored a remarkable initiative that brought together 10 international students from diverse backgrounds to explore the rich heritage and cultural tapestry of Suzhou, a picturesque city located in Jiangsu Province, East China.

Among the participants was Alexandre Beaudin, an 18-year-old Canadian engineering student enrolled at the University of Michigan – Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute. This group included students from Canada, Russia, Nigeria, Thailand, and Malaysia, all of whom were eager to immerse themselves in the intricate history, traditions, and cross-cultural connections that Suzhou has to offer.

Suzhou, renowned for its stunning gardens and traditional waterside architecture, provided more than just photogenic scenery for these students. As they walked through ancient gardens and along tranquil canals, the travelers found themselves engaged in a vibrant experience that allowed them to not only observe but also embrace the local culture.

Beaudin was particularly captivated by the architectural beauty of the historic residences, noting how the white walls, black-tiled roofs, and intricate wood carvings harmoniously complemented Suzhou's classical gardens. His appreciation for the art and design of the region was palpable as he explored the city.

A significant highlight of their visit was the Ni Art Museum, where the group’s understanding of Suzhou’s blend of modernity and tradition deepened. Beaudin found himself drawn to contemporary artworks that prompted introspection, especially resonating with a thought-provoking quote from an exhibiting artist about the authenticity of self-expression in the digital age.

As a social media content creator, Beaudin reflected on the relevance of this quote, discussing the tendency for individuals to present idealized versions of themselves online rather than their truthful identities. His insights highlighted the challenge of remaining genuine amid the pressures of digital interaction.

The students also had the opportunity to engage with Suzhou’s intangible cultural heritage by participating in woodblock printing. This meticulous art form involves carving a reversed image onto a wooden block, inking it, and pressing it onto paper, allowing them to connect with the local craftsmanship firsthand.

This journey not only immersed them in the local culture but also fostered meaningful cross-cultural connections among the participants. Beaudin emphasized the newfound appreciation the group developed for each other's differences, while recognizing their shared hopes and dreams, reinforcing the idea that they are united by common goals despite their varied backgrounds.

As the trip concluded, the group took away lasting memories and valuable lessons about cultural richness, mutual understanding, and the importance of forging connections in an increasingly globalized world.

This initiative by China Daily showcases the power of experiential learning and cross-cultural exchange, offering international students a unique perspective on China’s heritage while promoting a sense of unity among diverse cultures.
