On September 17, 2025, a significant seminar focused on regional immigration governance policy took place in Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province, China. This gathering saw participation from representatives of immigration departments from various countries, including Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Vietnam, the Republic of Korea, and China itself. Additionally, officials from the International Organization for Migration and the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Law Enforcement Cooperation Center were present, enhancing the seminar's scope and international collaboration.
The meeting was held in a pragmatic and friendly environment, characterized by mutual respect and trust among the attendees. Participants engaged in in-depth discussions centered around the theme of "Shared Safety and Risks, Integrated Development, and Continuous Promotion of Regional Immigration Governance." Delegates shared their latest immigration governance policies and initiatives, contributing to a rich tapestry of ideas and approaches to enhance regional immigration management.
During the seminar, the Chinese representatives proposed several key recommendations aimed at fostering regional cooperation. Emphasizing a comprehensive and sustainable security approach, they suggested the establishment of a joint law enforcement mechanism where countries would share analyses of immigration management situations. Moreover, they advocated for joint border patrols to combat cross-border illegal activities, reinforcing security measures to ensure a safe and orderly movement of people in the region.
The Chinese delegation further highlighted the importance of development services within immigration policies. They called for the coordination and facilitation of visa policies across the region, aiming to make talent mobility more attractive. This involves creating more effective residency and integration service policies, which will align immigration strategies with the broader objectives of regional economic integration. This synergy is expected to enhance regional development through improved openness and connectivity.
In addition to these proposals, the initiative also promotes the establishment of an Asian security model rooted in shared security principles. It aims to cultivate a collaborative atmosphere where parties can maintain dialogue and consultation while respecting each other's views. By building a cohesive regional immigration governance system, the participants aimed to support one another while modernizing their governance capabilities.
The seminar concluded with expressions of gratitude towards the Government of the People's Republic of China, particularly the National Immigration Administration, for their meticulous organization of the event. The organizers also extended their heartfelt thanks to all participants for their valuable contributions, reaffirming the collaborative spirit that characterized the seminar and the collective commitment to improving regional immigration governance.
