On the morning of October 31, Zhejiang University hosted an engaging international student cultural event titled "Art knows no boundaries, and cultural heritage remains fragrant" at the Liangzhu Museum of Chinese Historical Painting. This initiative organized by the International College attracted participants from various countries, coming together to appreciate the legacy and artistry inherent in traditional Chinese painting, which has flourished for a millennium.
As the narrator provided insightful commentary, the hall of the museum transformed into a magnificent tapestry, inviting students to embark on a journey through the exhibition, themed around "Song Paintings." This impressive display is segmented into three sections: "Passing on the Flame, Guarding Through Generations," which outlines the evolution of the "Comprehensive History of Chinese Painting" project; "The Essence of Song Through the Ages, A Cultural Legacy," highlighting over a thousand high-definition representations of magnificent Song dynasty artworks from the Five Dynasties through Song, Liao, and Jin periods. The exhibit also features a section, "Innovative Transformation, Boundless Realms," where visitors can witness the creative amalgamation of contemporary media with traditional art forms. Furthermore, in light of the upcoming Third Liangzhu Forum, the museum has introduced a special exhibition titled "The Sound of Great Harmony – Music in Song Dynasty Paintings."
Wandering through the museum, students were enveloped by stunning landscapes depicted in delicate brushstrokes, while harmonious melodies wafted through the air from bamboo flutes and pipa instruments. Among the attendees, Mamouhan from Egypt conveyed his astonishment at the intricate beauty of ancient Chinese paintings, noting that he had previously underestimated how a simple brush could conjure such diverse images through its skilled manipulation.
Two students, Kevin Nie from the United States and Yuming Yu from Malaysia, immersed themselves in this study tour not just as participants but as presenters. This enriching experience significantly broadened their understanding of China and highlighted the importance of cultural continuity, embodied in the philosophy of "passing on the torch and forging ahead."
The study tour provided an opportunity for the international students to savor the grandeur of Song Dynasty paintings. It reaffirms the notion that cultural heritage remains ever-relevant through diligent transmission and mutual exchange, fostering a vibrant tapestry of civilization.
