The University of Michigan – Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI) recently organized the event titled 'Resonance of Chinese Opera, Everlasting Friendship' on March 27, coinciding with World Theatre Day. This significant gathering took place at the Long Bin Building and attracted an audience of over a hundred participants, including Chinese and international faculty, students, alumni, and cultural enthusiasts, all united to celebrate the integration of Chinese cultural heritage and international exchanges.
As part of the event, distinguished guests launched the exhibition 'Splendid Shanghai Dream: The Art of Opera,' highlighting the rich traditions of Chinese opera. This exhibition featured historical artifacts, costumes, and unique facial makeup designs that underpinned the evolution of this revered art form.
In his opening address, Ansheng Zhang, Vice Executive Director of SJTU’s University Council, underscored the university's dedication to cultivating global talent. He emphasized the significance of opera as a medium for cultural exchange, referencing the impactful international performances of the legendary Mei Lanfang and the transition to contemporary digital sharing methods.
Min Zhou, Vice President of the Shanghai Overseas Returned Scholars Association (SORSA), also spoke at the event, commending its contribution to fostering cross-cultural connections. He further reiterated SORSA's commitment to advancing cultural diplomacy, an essential aspect of strengthening international relationships.
The highlight of the evening was an engaging performance by Li Jun, a national first-class performer from the Shanghai Peking Opera Theatre, who brought to life the classic tale 'Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy.' This performance captivated the audience and served as a testament to the enduring appeal of Chinese opera.
In addition to Li Jun's performance, faculty and students from SJTU's Sinology Club, along with international students from the JI, took the stage to perform excerpts from notable works such as 'The Legend of the Precious Consort' and 'Ode to Pear Blossom.' Their performances received enthusiastic applause, showcasing the talent and dedication of the participants.
The event successfully combined various elements of cultural exposition and live performances, offering a platform for participants to engage with and appreciate the depths of Chinese opera. This initiative highlights the continued relevance of traditional art forms in bridging cultural divides and fostering understanding between nations.
